DC LEARNs Annual Literacy Recognition & Awards Event brings together many of the District of Columbia’s literacy advocates and practitioners for a celebration of great personal stories.  The stories are centered around personal achievement by remarkable individuals as well as the individuals who provide the impetus for those stories through their commitment to volunteerism.

Everybody Wins! DC (EW!DC) is honored that two of our longstanding volunteers  Amy Bess and Jeff Lesher were finalists for the 2010 Literacy Volunteer Award.  This married couple have taken EW!DC under their wings and made a major contribution to our pursuit to deliver impactful literacy programs to nearly 4,000 underserved students in the metro area.

Amy Bess, Partner at Vedder Price P.C, is a long time EW!DC Board Member (serving as General Counsel), excellent fundraiser, and advocate for underserved children.  Amy helps provide the leadership and vision necessary to support EW!DC.  Jeff Lesher, Founder and Head Coach at Conduce LLC, is an active volunteer Reading Mentor.  He has donated more than 100 hours of his professional services to collaborate with  EW!DC management and staff to create a Human Resources Success Model, which intertwines EW!DC’s core values in the recruitment, development and evaluation process.

Additionally, Amy and Jeff make generous personal financial donations and have garnered financial support from their firms to support EW!DC’s operations.  Just as impressively, their daughter Sophie volunteered with EW!DC through an internship at her high school.

Amy and Jeff’s shared commitment to EW!DC has helped place smiles on the faces and books in the hands of more than 4,000 students annually.  EW!DC is grateful for their support and partnership

Testimonials
"Seeing her become more confident and her love of reading increase has been such a joy to watch."
"It's mostly fun to read and watch her become such a confident reader and learn to love reading as much as I do. She is one of my best friends."
"When an adult helps a child, it tells that child how special they are. We send a message to the child- you are important to me- that is powerful and undeniable."
"It's a fantastic program, and I think the mentors get as much, if not more, than the student. You meet wonderful kids and have lots of fun."
"When I read, I learn and grow-- you know, like Jack and the Beanstalk kind of growing and that's really big!"
