[District of Columbia, Nov. 11, 2014]—Everybody Wins! DC (EW! DC), the largest children’s mentoring and literacy non-profit in the Washington Metropolitan Area, will host its Eighth Annual Lawyers for Literacy Trivia Challenge at Kirkland & Ellis LLP on Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Thirteen teams from many of the area’s leading law firms have signed up in hopes of winning the grand title of Litterae Magister (Master of Literacy). With DC Quizzomaster Neal Racioppo asking a range of interesting questions; the event is sure to be provoke some friendly competition, all in support of EW!DC.

Participating law firms: Alston & Bird LLP, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Morrison & Foerester LLP, Sidley Austin LLP, Skadden Arps LLP, Troutman Sanders LLP, Vedder Price, and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich and Rosati LLP.

“This is a wonderful event that brings a specific sector together for the common purpose of supporting and promoting children’s literacy,” said EW!DC Executive Director, Mary Salander. “The funds raised will greatly benefit the students served by Everybody Wins! DC and we are very thankful to all of the participating law firms.”

EW!DC tackles illiteracy head-on, operating programs in 36 low-income public elementary schools and serving more than 5,000 children in the Washington Metropolitan Area every year. Through EW!DC’s three programs, Power Lunch, Readers Are Leaders, and StoryTime, children develop a love for reading and feel more confident in the classroom.

This event supports EW!DC’s signature mentoring and literacy Power Lunch program.  Power Lunch pairs professional adults to read, for one hour each week, with a public elementary school student during the student’s lunch hour. Many of the participating law firms support the program by encouraging their employees to volunteer as Power Lunch mentors.

Celebrating its 20th year, EW!DC has distributed more than 182,000 books to roughly 55,000 students in DC area public schools since its inception.

Despite gradual progress, the 2013 National Assessment of Educational Progress shows that DC schools continue to trail behind the national large-city average in reading and math.  Donations are essential in helping EW!DC pair children with Reading Mentors; this relationship creates a lifelong love of reading, enhances learning and nurtures self-esteem.

"Seeing her become more confident and her love of reading increase has been such a joy to watch."
"It's mostly fun to read and watch her become such a confident reader and learn to love reading as much as I do. She is one of my best friends."
"When an adult helps a child, it tells that child how special they are. We send a message to the child- you are important to me- that is powerful and undeniable."
"It's a fantastic program, and I think the mentors get as much, if not more, than the student. You meet wonderful kids and have lots of fun."
"When I read, I learn and grow-- you know, like Jack and the Beanstalk kind of growing and that's really big!"
"I wish Everybody Wins was everyday!"
