Afternoon at the Newseum!

The cafeteria of Thomson Elementary School was buzzing with excitement on Friday morning as students and mentors gathered before climbing on the bus to head over to the Newseum for an end-of-the-semester event hosted by Bloomberg. This event brought together 40 students from Thomson Elementary and their Bloomberg Reading Mentors for a festive lunch and a tour of two of the Newseum’s exciting exhibits.

After arriving at the Newseum’s Knight Studio, Bloomberg’s Tamika Alexander welcomed the students and mentors who then enjoyed delicious, kid-friendly lunch of chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, and sweet potato fries provided by Wolfgang Puck’s. This was a great opportunity for readers and their mentors to engage outside of school and to catch up before the holiday break.

After lunch, the students were given a tour of the Presidential Dogs exhibit. Students and Reading Mentors alike loved looking at the furry friends and reading about the history of pets in the White House. However, the biggest hit of the day was the Newseum’s interactive newsroom. In this exhibit, students had the chance to play news games at touch screen computer stations. Students and their Reading Mentors were also able to act the journalist and read sports, weather, and presidential news before watching their reports played back on the big screen. The students were thrilled to show off their reporting skills for their mentors.

The Bloomberg Reading Mentors were as happy as their reading partners to take a few hours off of work and explore the museum. This holiday event was a wonderful way to celebrate the end of a fun semester of reading and to help solidify relationships, both new and old, between our Thomson students and their Reading Mentors.

"It's mostly fun to read and watch her become such a confident reader and learn to love reading as much as I do. She is one of my best friends."
"When an adult helps a child, it tells that child how special they are. We send a message to the child- you are important to me- that is powerful and undeniable."
"It's a fantastic program, and I think the mentors get as much, if not more, than the student. You meet wonderful kids and have lots of fun."
"When I read, I learn and grow-- you know, like Jack and the Beanstalk kind of growing and that's really big!"
