PwC Brings Financial Literacy Training to the Students at Savoy Elementary

By EW!DC / Published: 11/20/2015

On Friday, November 29th, Everybody Wins! DC (EW!DC) partnered with PwC to provide financial literacy workshops to students at Savoy Elementary School.  The workshops were a part of PwC’s Day of Service and utilized the Earn Your Future curriculum developed by PwC. In 2012, PwC launched Earn Your Future (EYF), a five-year, $190 million commitment focused on helping students develop critical financial skills and providing educators with the resources and trainings to teach those skills.

PwC has also been a longtime supporter of EW!DC. Mentors from PwC began reading at Key Elementary in 2009. For the 2015-2016 school year, PwC has made a $35,000 grant to support the Power Lunch program at Savoy Elementary, EW!DC’s newest Power Lunch school in Ward 8. PwC now has Reading Mentors at both Key and Savoy.

Last Friday, 3rd-5th grade students from Savoy were matched with financial literacy trainers from PwC. During the workshop, students were split up into different groups and tasked with answers questions given to them about working. Students were asked to think about the differences between a job and a career. They also were able to brainstorm a list of jobs and careers they might be interested in the future. Students gave a broad range of answers like doctors and teachers, but one little girl said she wants to be an engineer when she grows up so she can understand how clocks work!

After thinking about career options, the workshop trainers led students through a mock job interview. First, the students were taught about the structure of an interview and then they got to practice! The children were asked to come up with questions that could be asked in interviews for specific jobs. For example, how would interview questions for a game designer be different from questions that a teacher might be asked? Once they thought about possible questions, students were able practice asking and answering questions.

This event was a great way to spark students’ imaginations about different jobs and careers available to them. EW!DC is so grateful for PwC’s  on-going support of our programs and we are looking forward to future opportunities to enrich the students we serve. "It's a fantastic program, and I think the mentors get as much, if not more, than the student. You meet wonderful kids and have lots of fun."
