EW!DC Welcomes Redskins Celebrities to Savoy Elementary

By EW!DC / Published: 12/06/2016

The students of Savoy Elementary cheered as Everybody Wins! DC surprised them with a special reading event with Redskins players: Houston Bates, Lee Hightower, Arie Kouandijo, Anthony Lanier II, Isaiah Williams, Redskins alumnus, Ravin Caldwell, and Redskins Cheerleaders Masako and Kara. EW!DC teamed up with the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation to host this event which benefited all 4th and 5th grade students at the school, as well as those students in EW!DC's Power Lunch program.

To promote the spirit of giving and appreciation, the cheerleaders read from the award-winning book Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids, which encourages positive behavior by using the concept of an invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to express kindness, appreciation, and a love of "filling bucket."

After the reading, with the help of the Redskins, students in the Power Lunch program did a craft activity with their Reading Mentors, filling out their own buckets of happiness. All students received a new book to take home courtesy of EW!DC and the Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation.

Redskins linebacker, Houston Bates, said, "This was one of my favorite events. Literacy is so important in our society and books open kids' imaginations. Any chance we get to come out and show students that reading is important, and that we as athletes do it too, we can set a good example."

The Washington Redskins Charitable Foundation works with Savoy Elementary and more than 100 elementary schools around the region to implement the Redskins Read program which brings a fun, activity-based literacy curriculum to 4th and 5th grade classrooms. We are so grateful to partners like them who help us bring the joy of reading to our students. To see more photos, please visit our Facebook page. You can also see a video of the event here
