Eric Riley, senior librarian with the DC Public Library regaled Everybody Wins! DC’s staff with a “Motivating Young Readers” training this summer. Here’s a top ten list, taken from Mr. Riley’s presentation, of things a mentor can do to spark a lifelong passion for reading and learning.
Ask your student about what books they’ve read that they really loved Ask neutral, open ended questions to elicit more then yes/no responses Listen for clues that can help you identify books Help select books with your students based upon their interests and explain why you feel they would like the selected titles Let the mentee pick from the selected books and get started Talk about the book after you have finished reading and see what the child liked and didn’t like Talk about the books that the two of you are reading and books you may have read when you were younger Allow the student to put down the book if they are uninterested Switch to a totally different book if the child’s interest is waning Remember it’s about keeping the student interested in reading for the rest of their life. Be enthusiastic about reading; keep it positive!
