Motivating Young Readers- Reading Mentor Tips

Eric Riley, senior librarian with the DC Public Library regaled Everybody Wins! DC’s staff with a “Motivating Young Readers” training this summer.  Here’s a top ten list, taken from Mr. Riley’s presentation, of things a mentor can do to spark a lifelong passion for reading and learning.

  • Ask your student about what books they’ve read that they really loved
  • Ask neutral, open ended questions to elicit more then yes/no responses
  • Listen for clues that can help you identify books
  • Help select books with your students based upon their interests and explain why you feel they would like the selected titles
  • Let the mentee pick from the selected books and get started
  • Talk about the book after you have finished reading and see what the child liked and didn’t like
  • Talk about the books that the two of you are reading and books you may have read when you were younger
  • Allow the student to put down the book if they are uninterested
  • Switch to a totally different book if the child’s interest is waning
  • Remember it’s about keeping the student interested in reading for the rest of their life.  Be enthusiastic about reading; keep it positive!
