3rd Annual Lawyers for Literacy Challenge

Guadalcanal, Antietam, Waterloo … these were all minor skirmishes compared to the battle that was waged in the Kirkland & Ellis moot court room last night as twelve teams from the District of Columbia’s most impressive law firms and associations battled for the coveted title of LLM, Litterae Magister (Masters of Literacy) at the 3rd Annual Lawyers For Literacy Trivia Challenge.

In the end, a team from Troutman Sanders LLP was victorious with a score of 38. Teams from Kirkland & Ellis (Staff Team) and an undermanned team from WMACCA finished 2nd and 3rd to round out the top spots. Other teams from Kilpatrick Stockton LLP, Kirkland & Ellis LLP, Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP, Sidley Austin LLP, Sonnenschein Nath Rosenthal LLP,  White & Case LLP and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati also gallantly competed.

A tie breaker for third place between the Kirkland & Ellis  (Environmental & Litigation ) team and WMACCA team was one of the most exciting moments of the evening.  For the initial tie-breaker, each team had to alternate in naming members of the Toy Hall of Fame – the first team to get one wrong would lose making the other the third place winner.  Kirkland & Ellis went first and correctly named the “Slinky” as a member; WMACCA’s initial response of “Yo-yo” was rejected as incorrect and team Kirkland & Ellis was declared the bronze medalist.  However, in reviewing the answer list, it was discovered that the “Yo-yo” was indeed a Hall of Famer – listed under the brand name “Duncan Yo-yo.”

The Kirkland & Ellis team graciously surrendered their trophies and the contest went to a second tiebreaker.   For this tiebreaker, each team had to name the number of steps in the Leaning Tower of Pisa – whichever team came closest would be the victor.  WMACCA’s response: 201.  Kirkland & Ellis: 187.  The correct answer: 293.  WMACCA was victorious.
