2019 Lawyers for Literacy

On November 13th, Everybody Wins DC (EWDC) hosted the 13th Annual Lawyers for Literacy Trivia Challenge at Sidley Austin. 14 teams from many of the area’s leading law firms competed to win the coveted title of Litterae Magister (Master of Literacy).

EWDC Executive Director, Jordi Hutchinson kicked off the evening with a quick game.

Raise your hand if you have a favorite book from your childhood. Now raise your hand if you have a memory of reading with someone.

Now look around the room. Most, if not all of you raised your hand.

This is what I want for our students, all 500 of them to be able to raise their hand and say they have a favorite book and favorite memory.

Our students want to give up recess one day a week to read with a caring adult. Be that adult in their life to provide those memories.

Let the games Begin!

Quizmaster, Andy Austin, asked a range of challenging questions on subjects ranging from sports and literature to current events in DC.

After four rounds of close competition, Bloomberg Law (Rhythm & Bluebooks) emerged victorious.

1st Place: Bloomberg Law

The “Alston & Nerd” team from Alston & Bird came in 2nd, and Wilson, Sonsini, Goodrich & Rosati came in 3rd place.

This event supports EWDC’s shared reading programs. Many of the participating law firms also support the program by encouraging their employees to volunteer as Power Lunch mentors. We are already looking forward to next year’s event!

Special thanks to Sidley Austin for hosting EWDC again this year, and its continued support of our programs.

Thanks to our participating law firms: Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, Alston & Bird, Bloomberg Law, DLA Piper, Powers Pyles Sutter & Verville, Sidley Austin LLP, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, Venable LLP, Vedder Price, White & Case, Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.
