Story Time with At-Large Councilmember Robert White

Friday, November 8, Garrison Elementary School Power Lunch students received a special visit from At-Large Councilmember, Robert White. White delighted school staff, Power Lunch students and mentors with a StoryTime reading and conversation.

EWDC Executive Director, Jordi Hutchinson; Garrison ES student, Naomi;
At-Large Councilmember, Robert White

Before reading, students asked questions and shared their ideas on what they thought a councilmember does. White then elaborated on his role as a councilmember and its impact on students in Washington, D.C.

White read A Little Girl in a Big, Big World, written by Daijha, Ashley, and Makayla of Reach Incorporated. The story centers around Jasmine, a girl who wants to make a difference in her community, but sometimes she feels like a little girl in a big, big world.

The story was highly engaging, requiring students to utter the phrase “in a big, big world” during parts of the book.

White even put his flow to the test when reciting a rap written by the main character Jasmine — Everyone loved it!

White chose the book A Little Girl in a Big, Big World to illustrate the point that you are never too young to make change in your community, and empowered the Power Lunch students of Garrison Elementary to make a difference where they live.

Following StoryTime, students had the opportunity to take home new books as part of EWDC’s Book Project.

CM White writes words of encouragement

Special thanks to CM Robert White & team and Principal Kiplinger for making this event possible!
