Our DEI Commitment

EVERYBODY WINS DC’S COMMITMENT TO DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION

COMMITMENT TO DEI:

At Everybody Wins DC (EWDC), we recognize diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) as an integral part of our mission, our programs, and our workplace. We affirm and celebrate the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our stakeholders, including youth, volunteers, donors, and staff, and the value their voices bring to EWDC and our work.

DEI STATEMENT:

Workplace

EWDC is committed to the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion with regard to its workplace practices, including hiring, promotion, pay and advancement. The organization promotes equal opportunities in all aspects of its employment practices and volunteer recruitment and training, and prohibits discrimination and harassment based on any status protected by law. EWDC embraces and values the creativity, diversity of experience and thought, and the enhanced quality of work product generated when people of diverse backgrounds, cultures, experiences, education, races, faith, abilities, ages, and gender identities or expression collaborate to create something unique and meaningful together. We believe that every one of our employees and volunteers brings a unique perspective and experience to help us advance our mission to create meaningful and inspiring mentoring relationships with young people. EWDC creates opportunities for all its employees’ and volunteers’ voices and viewpoints to be heard and respected and where individuals feel empowered to bring their authentic selves to their work.

Programs

EWDC believes that all children should have the opportunity to reach their full potential. This can only happen when children are part of a safe and inclusive environment where they are respected and valued equally. EWDC strives to provide this for our students by embedding principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all facets of our programming. We ensure that our reading-based activities are available and accessible to all students, with a priority on those communities who have historically been underserved. We elevate diverse voices and perspectives within our program materials and activities so that students can see and hear themselves represented. We encourage open and transparent conversations among and across students and volunteers of all backgrounds to help build and sustain more equitable communities where all individuals are valued for their unique perspectives and experiences.

Board

EWDC has committed to principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in its Board recruitment and development efforts, and places a priority on expanding the diversity of its all-volunteer Board to more closely reflect the demographics of the students and families enrolled in EWDC’s programs, the majority of whom are Black and Hispanic. To that end, EWDC has formed an Associate Board comprised of a diverse group of young people dedicated to the mission of EWDC, most of whom serve as reading mentors in the program, and who support the development efforts of the organization. EWDC hopes that the Associate Board also will serve as a future source of Board talent for the organization.
